Unexpected power outage. Emergency online work meeting when you're rushing to the airport with your laptop running at the last 10% battery charge. Camping trip where you're suddenly in the mood to watch a movie. For a 21st-century dweller, owning a powerful portable battery is almost obligatory when there's no charging point in sight. Are you curious to know how do power banks charge laptops and what are the best laptop charging practices? Keep on reading, then!
You need to consider many important factors when shopping for a laptop power bank.
Ideally, your power bank's maximum capacity should be equal to or higher than the capacity of your laptop charger. Bear in mind that power banks provide 70%-80% output capacity more often than not, meaning you might need a 15,000 mAh power bank to juice up a 5,000 mAh laptop at least twice fully.
Laptops come with plenty of ports (USB Type-C, USB Type-A, etc.), and so do portable chargers. To avoid purchasing an incompatible power bank, you must check your laptop's input charging port and find a power bank with an output port to match. Alternatively, special adapters may be of service.
Knowing how to power laptop with power bank requires understanding the wattage concept. In simple terms, it's a measure of a device's power, its appetite for consuming energy expressed in watts. If the wattage of your laptop and your portable battery doesn't coincide, there's hardly any chance to make this union work. We'll illustrate what we mean in the table of comparison below.
Laptop model | Power input requirement | Crave PowerPack 2, total output limit 81W |
Lenovo Ideapad Flex | 65W |
Not a 100% match, but the power bank’s output power capabilities outperform those of the laptop, so it’s all good
|
HP Pavilion 15 Gaming | 150W |
It’s a no-no. In this case, the power bank has a lower supply, which might cause a reverse flow of power from the laptop to the power bank and leave you with a drained battery instead of a recharged one
|
MacBook Air | 45W | Works perfectly fine |
So you've purchased a portable battery in line with your personal needs. Once the order gets delivered, the power bank will most likely be uncharged. Make sure to juice it up for future use. Then, when your laptop starts to die, you'll be able to recharge it by simply plugging it into the power pack.
The best option is to reserve the much-needed energy only for when you need it. Believe us; you would hate to run out of battery when you're on the go.
Some portable battery models require you to press the On/Off button for the power bank to activate. Additionally, you can check if the charging has started by looking at the laptop screen. On Windows, you should see a battery icon filling up with white. On MacBook, you should see a lightning bolt inside the battery icon.
Running a few programs simultaneously may result in quicker battery draining, which is not what you want during the charging process. Work on one program, close it, and move on to the next. Also, make sure to close all apps running in the background.
If you don't necessarily have to use them while charging, let your laptop fill up the battery in peace.
USB flash drives, mice, etc., can drain your battery faster than you say, "Oops."
